The 4 Key Taxation Moments for Your Gold
Let's recap: When Do We Pay Tax on PRECIOUS METALS?
AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE
When purchasing your precious metals, the only tax to consider is VAT (Value Added Tax).
- GOLD: The purchase of investment gold (i.e., coins and cast or minted bars) will not be subject to VAT, because in most countries, investment gold is exempt from this tax. This is the case in France.
- Silver, platinum, palladium, and osmium: As industrial products, silver is subject to VAT, with rates varying by country (Switzerland 8.1% - Germany 19% - United Kingdom 20% - France 20% - Italy 22%).
DURING STORAGE
Holding precious metals is practically tax-exempt in France. Unlike real estate, precious metals are not subject to annual taxes, income tax, or even wealth tax.
In France, you can keep your precious metals with peace of mind, monitor the price of gold, silver, etc., and sell them at the right time. However, it should be noted that in some countries like Switzerland, the value of your gold may be taken into account when calculating wealth tax.
DURING DONATION
Investment gold, as defined by the terms previously stated, is subject to ordinary succession rules. Thus, the heirs benefiting from the gold are subject to inheritance tax, calculated according to well-defined criteria(the total amount of the estate, degree of kinship, etc.).
Many people opt for a "living" donation, which allows them, among other things, to avoid this often high inheritance tax. It is important to inquire about the applicable rules and thresholds and to prepare for the future with appropriate wealth management!
AT THE TIME OF RESALE
The main tax is the Capital Gains Tax (CGT). It is present in almost all countries(Italy 12.5% - United Kingdom from 10% to 28% depending on income - Switzerland 0% - Belgium 0% - Germany 0%). If you are a resident in France and you sell abroad, other taxes such as customs duties or even the French CGT may be applicable if you repatriate the funds to France.
In France, the 36.2% CGT leads to a partial and then total exemption from the tax depending on the holding period. The alternative is the Precious Metals Tax (PMT), i.e., 11.5% of the transaction amount.
Key Takeaways on Gold
SAFE HAVEN
Gold has a unique safe-haven status that guarantees your purchasing power, regardless of economic and geopolitical market fluctuations.
FAVORABLE TAXATION
There is no tax upon purchase, and a possible exemption upon resale if you keep your gold long enough. A good thing since gold is an asset that appreciates in value over time.
BULLISH POTENTIAL
In addition to its unique status as a safe haven, the price of Gold also benefits from significant upside potential: For example, over the past ten years (as of September 2023 as a reference), the price of Gold has increased by 75%.
IMPRESSIVE LIQUIDITY
Whenever and wherever you decide to sell your Gold, you will have no trouble getting a good price for your Gold Coin, Gold Bar, or Small Gold Bar according to the official international market rate!
